Here's what was
promised...Information about A.V.I.D.
The A.V.I.D. program, which is an acronym for Advancement Via
Individual Determination, is a program dedicated to helping students
achieve their goals of going to college. Students considered for
A.V.I.D. are bright students who may be underachieving, may be
underserved in the college system or who may be first generation college
students. The A.V.I.D. class, held within the regular school day,
provides support and academic monitoring and tutoring. The writing
process, collaborative learning and reading are the core strategies of
the program.
Created by Mary Catherine Swanson, the English chair at San Diego's
Clairemont High School in 1980, this successful program now serves over
70,000 middle and high school students in more than 3,432 schools over
35 states and 14 countries. More than 30,000 have graduated from
A.V.I.D. programs and matriculated to college at a rate of over 95%.
In middle school, our task is to prepare our students to succeed in
college preparatory, Advanced Placement and/or IB programs in high
school. In A.V.I.D. students are given the support and instruction
they need to succeed. The A.V.I.D. coordinator and elective
teacher, along with tutors and the school site team, provide the
necessary support for students who might otherwise not aspire to
attend college. By being enrolled in rigorous classes, and with
the support of the biweekly tutorial program and the A.V.I.D. elective
class, students' grade point average rises. Increasing numbers of
students enroll in high school honors classes and students come to share
a sense of school pride and become role models among their peers.
We attempt to motivate students and provide them with the skills and
confidence to reach their goals.
The most important factor within the A.V.I.D. program for success is
the Individual Determination. If a student does not want to
devote or dedicate the time required for the program, he/she will not be
successful. Therefore, the final final criterion for acceptance
will be a Student Interview. Members of Hanby's A.V.I.D. program
will interview potential candidates as the final determining factor.
Please contact Susan Cambron in room 211 at Hanby to find out more about
this program.
